THE RIGHT PLAN FOR QUEENSLAND’S FUTURE
The LNP has today announced it will deliver club upgrades for the Aspley Hornets Football clubhouse to support the Hornets’ women’s AFL teams, in a major boost for grassroots sport in the Aspley community.
A $1.8 million commitment will deliver the club's first women’s changerooms, to be used by the Aspley Hornets Queensland AFL Women’s team and the wider club community.
The LNP’s pledge will deliver two changerooms, each with showers and toilets, as well as an equipment and education room.
LNP Leader David Crisafulli said the LNP’s investment at the Aspley Hornets would drive grassroots sports participation, as part of the Right Plan for Queensland’s Future.
“The LNP is committed to boosting grassroots sporting facilities across Queensland, providing opportunities for the next generation of young athletes to learn and compete in sports,” Mr Crisafulli said.
“The Olympics legacy shouldn’t be about a single stadium or venue, it should be about delivering upgrades to grassroots sports across Queensland, just like the LNP will do right here with Aspley Hornets.
“Investing in grassroots sports is a win for players and a win for the community, that’s why it’s part of the LNP’s Right Plan for Queensland’s Future.”
LNP Candidate for Aspley Amanda Cooper said Aspley Hornets were an incredibly important part of the grassroots sporting community on the Northside.
“Sixty years after the Club began, it’s now past time that our excellent women’s AFL players are properly catered for and encouraged to take part in the game,” Ms Cooper said.
“From starting out as just a small club of juniors in 1964, Aspley Hornets has evolved into major community club, providing a pathway for players from Auskick at age 6 all the way through to Masters for those over 35, and the LNP wants to support their continued growth for the community.
“With the 20 per cent annual growth of women playing AFL, these stand-alone changerooms will help boost the future of female sport on Brisbane’s Northside.”
Aspley Hornets Club President Keith Hill welcomed the LNP’s commitment to upgrade women’s facilities at the club.
“These changerooms will be used by females from ages six to 60. If you are a woman playing AFL, we will have a dedicated facility for you,” Mr Hill said.
