THE RIGHT PLAN FOR QUEENSLAND’S FUTURE
The LNP has committed to prepare a business case for the refresh of Wellington Point Reserve, to improve safety in the marine infrastructure and improve the amenity of the area if elected next month.
Wellington Point boat ramp is dangerously exposed to winds, making it dangerous for all but the most experienced users. The jetty is in poor condition and parking problems make it hard to enjoy this beautiful area during peak times.
The LNP’s commitment of $100,000 towards the preparation of a business case for the improvement of the reserve is designed to properly plan and price the works that will be needed to ensure the safety and desirability of the Point for years to come.
LNP candidate for Oodgeroo Amanda Stoker said the investment would allow for a well-planned, community-supported refresh of the Wellington Point reserve that will make it safer and more enjoyable for locals.
“The LNP is committed to seeing important reserves like Wellington Point preserved and improved so that locals can get the most out of them. That starts with a safer boat ramp, and should also take in the renovation of the jetty and crime prevention strategies.”
“Wellington Point, and nearby King Island, are icons of our region. We need to make sure its infrastructure is safe and well-maintained for locals and visitors to enjoy.”
Wellington Point local and boat-ramp user Brett Blair welcomed the announcement and said that it was vital that progress was made toward making the boat ramp safer.
“Right now, the Wellington Point boat ramp is really difficult for all but the most experienced boaties to use. Without a breakwater, users are exposed to dangerous winds and it’s no surprise that many less-experienced people feel they have to go to other ramps in the region for a safer approach. It’s time we took steps toward designing this well and making a plan to deliver it.”
Peter McKendry, Commodore of Raby Bay Volunteer Marine Rescue Queensland said his volunteers find the use of the Wellington Point boat ramp continually hampered because its poor design means that unsuitable winds and tide levels often mean they can’t safely make it into the ramp, and even when they do, there is no safe beaching or berthing area to return the boating public to shore.
“Our motto of Safety of Lives at Sea is one we hold dear, and any improvements and enhancements that enable us to better provide that service to our community is a cause we will always back. Any improvement that creates a safer working environment for my much-valued volunteers is something that we should all support. The proposed focus into a business case into providing these much-needed improvements is something I will happily get behind.”
Amanda Stoker said Redlanders could vote to have a clear business case for our local marine infrastructure and support the future of the Redlands as a tourism and lifestyle destination by backing the LNP at the coming election.
