The Mackay Whitsundays rugby league community is roaring forward with the Crisafulli Government delivering $3.125 million to upgrade the Western Suburbs Leagues Club, home of the Wests Tigers.
The upgrade will deliver four new change rooms, accessible toilets, parents' room and a viewing platform, alongside the addition of four multipurpose courts with lighting, making the club more accessible for players and spectators while supporting the growing needs of the community.
The funding delivers on a key election commitment and is one of 117 clubs to be funded under the first round of the Games On! program, which is delivering new and upgraded fields and courts, clubhouses, changerooms and lighting for community sporting clubs across Queensland.
Games On! ensures all of Queensland benefits from the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and follows the announcement of the new $200 Play On! Sports Vouchers, which will also deliver cost of living relief for families and allow more Queensland kids to be involved in junior sport.
Premier David Crisafulli said Games On! was about delivering a legacy for grassroots sports across the State.
“Games On! is delivering better sports facilities across Queensland,” Premier Crisafulli said.
“Queensland has a proud tradition of producing elite athletes, many from regional areas like Mackay, and these upgrades will help train the next generation of talent.”
Member for Mirani Glen Kelly said the upgrade would help the next generation of athletes take their abilities to the next level.
“These new changerooms and accessible facilities are a game-changer for the Wests Tigers, where this club has been an integral part of the community for decades,” Mr Kelly said.
“From junior players starting their sporting journey to senior players showing off their skills, these upgrades will benefit everyone.”
