Women’s footy will continue to thrive in Brisbane’s western suburbs with a $550,000 commitment from an elected Dutton-led LNP government to provide new female facilities at the Sherwood Magpies Australian Football Club.
Federal LNP candidate for Moreton, Henry Swindon, said the investment would provide a more inclusive environment for the club’s growing women’s league.
“The Sherwood Magpies is a renowned Brisbane footy club with over 1,000 players including more than 350 female players, making it one of the largest clubs in Queensland and one of the fastest growing clubs in Australia for female participation,” Mr Swindon said.
“However, currently the women and girls have to share dressing rooms and bathroom facilities with the male players. This significant investment from an elected LNP Government will assist in the delivery of new female changing rooms, bathrooms, and upgraded lighting, making the club an even safer and more inclusive environment.”
Liberal National Party Senator for Queensland, Paul Scarr, said “The Sherwood Magpies are undoubtedly one of the great sporting clubs in our region. They have a rich history, along with an incredible community of supporters and volunteers. I’m proud to support this incredible investment back into our region.”
Director of Female Football at the Sherwood Magpies, Laura Archer, said, “This investment for our club and its members is an absolute game changer, especially for our female players. Currently the women and girls have to share dressing rooms and bathroom facilities with the male players.
“At a club that is so inclusive with its culture, this money will ensure that the facilities keep pace with this culture and growth in female participation, allowing every single player to have the privacy they deserve whilst continuing to play the sports that they love in a safe environment.”
