Brisbane’s citywide green bin rollout is almost 20 per cent complete, with more than 28,000 new green bins delivered to residents across the suburbs.
Green bins are now part of Council’s core waste collection service, which includes red bins, yellow bins, kerbside collections, resource recovery centres and public waste infrastructure.
The green bin rollout has been completed in 32 suburbs, with the rollout continuing across another 44 suburbs over the coming month.
Close to 170,000 green bins were in circulation before the rollout began this month, with more than 200,000 green bins now being used across the city.
Around 9000 green bins are being delivered every week, with 315,000 green bins expected to be in use by the end of the rollout.
The citywide rollout is expected to divert between 65,000 and 80,000 tonnes of green waste from landfill every year.
The rollout is part of the 2025–26 Budget initiative to expand green waste recycling, reduce landfill and help residents avoid the cost of the State Government’s waste levy.
As part of the rollout, the former green bin service charge has been rolled into one Universal Waste Charge which covers all citywide waste services.
Almost 230,000 tonnes of green waste have been recycled via green bin collections since 2019-20.
The supply of green bins has been funded by the State Government’s Grow FOGO fund, although ongoing collection and processing remains the responsibility of Council.
