The LNP has today announced it will deliver exciting new areas in Honeyeater Park, in a major boost for community sport in Upper Kedron and Ferny Grove.
An LNP Government would partner with Brisbane City Council to significantly bolster local grassroots sport investment in the area, delivering a new playing field and connected facilities to allow community sporting groups to have training and playing grounds.
LNP Shadow Minister for Sport Tim Mander said the LNP’s $1.5 million commitment was part of the LNP’s Games On! community Olympic and Paralympic legacy fund to boost participation in grassroots sport across Queensland in the leadup to 2032 and beyond.
“The LNP will deliver a legacy across Queensland ahead of 2032, to encourage more kids into sport and train our next generation of Olympians and Paralympians, state including at the Honeyeater Park Sports Precinct,” Mr Mander said.
“Queensland’s grassroots sporting and recreation clubs are the backbone of local communities and Games On! will get more Queenslanders on the field.
“Labor’s failures have overseen $20 billion-plus in project cost blowouts that could have instead delivered community infrastructure like this much needed upgrade for Honeyeater Park earlier.”
LNP candidate for Ferny Grove Nelson Savanh said Honeyeater Park was an incredibly important part of the future for sport and recreation in Brisbane’s north-west.
“The LNP will kickstart this much-needed local sporting precinct for our growing area, starting with a playing field,” Mr Savanh said.
“With north-west Brisbane community sports facilities already at capacity this project will allow more community sporting groups to have training and playing grounds in the local neighbourhood.
Local councillor for The Gap Ward Steven Toomey said Honeyeater Park was set to become a vibrant hub for families and sports enthusiasts, thanks to the commitment from the LNP.
“As the largest open space in The Gap Ward, this park will provide an ideal venue for team sports like cricket, AFL, football, and hockey,” Cr Toomey said.
“This investment not only promotes outdoor activity among children and encourages them to engage with local sports groups, but it also fosters a sense of community and connection among residents.
“By creating a space where families can come together, Honeyeater Park will play a vital role in building a strong and active community for everyone to enjoy.”
Mr Savanh said Queenslanders can vote for the Honeyeater Park upgrade and a government which works for them, by voting LNP at this election.
“Queenslanders must show Labor the door in 2024, to ensure the right focus on delivering the programs, services and communities for our state,” he said.
“Only the LNP stands ready to deliver a fresh start for Queensland.”
