The LNP has today announced it will deliver upgrades for the Redlands Cricket Club, in a major boost for grassroots sport for the Bayside.
A $1 million commitment will deliver a new women’s changeroom and bathroom block at the growing club’s playing fields at EGW Wood Sportsground, to accommodate women’s home teams and visiting teams.
Women’s cricket has been rapidly growing in the Redlands and across the state – but participation requires the safety, dignity and privacy of dedicated change rooms and washrooms.
LNP Leader David Crisafulli said the LNP’s investment at the Redlands Cricket Club would drive grassroots sports participation, as part of the Right Plan for Queensland’s Future.
“The LNP is committed to boosting grassroots sporting facilities across Queensland, providing opportunities for the next generation of young athletes to learn and compete in sports,” Mr Crisafulli said.
“The Olympics legacy shouldn’t be about a single stadium or venue, it should be about delivering upgrades to grassroots sports across Queensland, just like the LNP will do right here with Redlands Cricket.
“Investing in grassroots sports is a win for players and a win for the community, that’s why it’s part of the LNP’s Right Plan for Queensland’s Future.”
LNP candidate for Oodgeroo Amanda Stoker said the $1 million project was part of the LNP’s plan to support healthy lifestyles and strong community networks.
“The LNP’s commitment will build capacity for Redlands Cricket, opening up more opportunities for female players,” Ms Stoker said.
“Our commitment is proof we believe in the important work of local sporting clubs like Redlands Cricket in fostering the best in young Redlanders.
“Grassroots sport is great for building character, friendships and good health – and with more women than ever playing cricket, Redlands Tigers are well placed to help develop female players into elite sportswomen.
“It’s great to have opportunities of this quality available right here in Wellington Point.”
President of Redland Cricket Inc. Sean Lloyd said the investment would allow for the development of a strong pipeline of female cricket players of all ages and help make the Redlands a competitive option for hosting community and pathway carnivals, plus training camps for elite teams coming to Brisbane.
“The Redlands has a strong history of producing outstanding Cricket players who have made a significant mark on the local, national and international game,” Mr Lloyd said.
“We look forward to more female cricketers coming from the Redlands.
“That starts with providing amenities like these which, when absent, present a barrier to women's and girl’s participation.”
Local cricketer Eve Lyndon-Floate was bowled over by the announcement.
“This is really cool, there are not enough changerooms at the grounds we play at; having one here at our home ground makes a big difference to all girls playing, I can’t wait to see what it looks like,” Eve said.
